Third-Party Liability Insurance only covers damage you cause to other people and is therefore not subject to an excess.
Third Party Liability + Limited Cover and Third Party Liability + Comprehensive Cover come with an excess amount of €150 per incident. If you have the damage repaired through the ABN AMRO Claims Service, this excess does not apply. One exception is window replacement, which carries an excess of €75.
No excess applies in the event of theft, attempted theft, break-in or joyriding if your car was properly secured at the time of the incident. The Dutch Motor Vehicle Certification Association (Stichting Certificering Motorrijtuigen) has defined different security classes. If your car does not meet the requirements, your excess will be 2.5% of your car’s current value, with a minimum of €375.
If you have taken out the additional breakdown cover and you are provided with a temporary replacement car while the damage is being repaired, the rental company may charge an excess. Sometimes this excess may be lowered for a fee.
Is an alarm system required for car insurance? No. An alarm system is not required. However, if your car is adequately secured, you do not have to pay an excess in case of theft, attempted theft, break-in or joyriding. The Dutch Motor Vehicle Certification Association (Stichting Certificering Motorrijtuigen, SCM) has defined different security classes. If your car does not have an SCM-certified security system, the insurance will still pay out in case of a claim due to theft. However, if your car is not adequately secured, your excess will be equal to 2.5% of the list value (subject to a minimum of €375). Click here for more information about anti-theft security systems.
